Hinged gutters with an extended downspout help keep water away from your home's foundation, and make lawn mowing a little easier.
When it comes to moving water away from the home, the best way to move it quickly is to use a 5” gutter with a larger size 3" x 4" downspout, which prevents water from spilling over the top of the gutters and damaging your landscaping below. Water is also displaced further from the foundation.
Check builders' specifications to be sure they’re not skimping on the gutters. Factory-painted, seamless aluminum gutters with box and strip mitered corners are superior to galvanized steel gutters. Factory primed aluminum gutters will never rust. For a clean look without unsightly nail heads, gutters should be installed with hidden hangers.
Those nails holding the gutters together will rust, and they tend to fly loose in strong winds. A better solution is a hinged gutter, which allows the bottom of the gutter to be lifted up and out of the way – it eliminates the rusty nail and makes mowing around the gutters a snap.
